From a lesson as children, we learn at a very young age to accept everyone as they are. We learned that people are different from each other, that they have different colors in their eyes, in their hair, in their skin. They wear different clothes, portray different styles, play different sports, eat different foods. We learned about the different languages and different countries that they might come from, the different customs that they might have. We learned that through our own maybe even day-to-day lives, we will encounter people that don’t walk, act, talk, or look like us.

After learning this, coming to terms on it, we learned another extremely valuable lesson. Though people won’t be the same as us, they won’t tie their shoes the same way we do, they won’t drive the same cars we do, or even have cars, they’ll name their children different names, they’ll pray in different ways or not at all, we learned to not judge them based on their appearance. Judgment, racism, bigotry, all of these things are taught. A baby is not born knowing color of skin, or practice of religion. And as we have learned to not judge a book by its cover, we must use these principles do to the same with…. juicing ingredients!

To transition from speaking of some very serious topics to the fruits and food items you’re about to be throwing into your blender, let’s start off explaining what juicing is.

What you will need to “juice”:

  • A juicer. (Not a blender, juicing is not the same as working at Smoothie King.)
  • That’s it.

What is juicing:

juicing1

Juicing involves removing the pulp from your fruit while you are taking the most important part out of it. The pulp has insoluble fiber in it, what is going into your drink is soluble fiber.

You can use a blender if you don’t have a juicer (we’re not a very exclusive club) but then you have to find a way to strain out the pulp from your concoction.

Juicing is a surefire way for you to get your fruits and veggies into your everyday diet if you don’t like to eat them, or you’re not used to eating them.

The only reason you would have to worry about calories is if you are just adding fruits to your juice. Like with everything in life, find a balance between your vegetable and your fruit ingredients, the fruits will add taste to the veggies and the veggies will bring down the calorie count from the fruits.

Another bonus about juicing is there is always a perfect recipe for whatever you have on your kitchen counter that you just want to get rid of (and of course, it is always healthy for you!). This might make the scariest and not so pleasant tasting veggies turn into just another ingredient in your yummy, light and HEALTHY juice!

These 10 juicing ingredients may sound like a terrible idea to you, but in reality, they taste delicious and they are also extremely nutritious!

This is how we are going to do it. We’ve taken the liberty of plugging in some of the ingredients that sound disgusting at juicerecipes.com and they’ve suggested a few juicing recipes that contain them.

The ingredients that you or your kids will turn a nose up at or make an ugly face just at the name of are listed below in a combination of recipes (also listed! (bonus)), that will help kick start you into juicing and on your way to a healthier you!

 Broccoli and  Asparagus

juicing2
Ask any child which food is the “yuckiest”, he or she will reply immediately with “Broccoli!”, and that’s only because most of them don’t know what asparagus is, or how to pronounce it. Here is a great juice recipe that includes both of them with a mixture of yummy fruits:
The Arthritis Soother
Apple – 1 medium (3″ dia)
Asparagus – 4 spear, medium (5-1/4″ to 7″ long)
Broccoli – 1 stalk
Carrots – 3 large (7-1/4″ to 8-/1/2″ long)
Celery – 3 stalk, large (11″-12″ long)
Olive Oil – 1 tablespoon
Parsley – 1 handful
Tip: Add the olive oil at the end already in the cup, (don’t put it in the juicer!)

 Brussel Sprout and  Cucumber

juicing3
Even as an adult the words brussel sprout makes my nose cringe. Just imagine these two ingredients together and tasting good?! Sounds like a literal recipe of disaster. But here is a recipe, though it’s quite the opposite of a disaster:

Flower Power
Brussel Sprout – 1 sprout
Cucumber – 1 cucumber (8-1/4″)
Oranges – 2 fruit (2-5/8″ dia)
Pineapple – 1/4 fruit
Spinach – 5 handful
Tip: Put the spinach through first!

Kale,  Collard Greens, and  Bell Pepper

juicing4

Wow, I’m sorry but that sounds utterly disgusting. Though it received positive reviews for a reason! Give this recipe a try for adding three of some unlikely friends together in one juice:

Full of Kale-cium
Apple – 1 medium (3″ dia)
Bell Pepper (red) – 1 medium (approx 2-3/4″ long, 2-1/2 dia.)
Carrots – 3 medium
Cilantro – 1 handful
Collard Greens – 1 cup, chopped
Kale – 4 leaf (8-12″)

 Cayenne Pepper and  Celery

juicing5

If the thought of salsa makes your mouth water, ditch the chips and the extra calories and grab your juicer! Here is a recipe that will bring a bit that fresh taste into your juicing diet! (It also has bell pepper).

Fresh Salsa
Bell Pepper (green) – 1 medium (approx 2-3/4″ long, 2-1/2″ dia)
Cayenne Pepper (spice) – 1 dash
Celery – 1 stalk, large (11″-12″ long)
Cilantro – 1 handful
Garlic – 1 clove
Onion (spring/scallion) – 1 medium (4-1/8″ long)
Salt (himalayan) – 1 dash
Tomato – 1 cup cherry tomatoes

 Cabbage (red)

juicing6

For our number one we thought we would bring in the ol’ cabbage that you thought was a head of lettuce. This is a great recipe for you to use it before it goes bad, it also contains quite a few skeptical ingredients I wouldn’t be too wary of:

Purple Power
Apple – 1 medium (3″ dia)
Cabbage (red) – 1/4 head, medium (about 5″ dia)
Celery – 3 stalk, large (11″-12″ long)
Cider Vinegar (apple) – 1 tbsp
Ginger Root – 1 thumb (1″ dia)
Grapes – 15 grapes
Lemon – 1/2 fruit (2-3/8″ dia)

We hope you are brave, enjoy and get juicing!
